What is the TMRP DTP?
The Trials Methodology Research Partnership (TMRP) DTP is a collaborative PhD programme funded by MRC-NIHR. It focuses on enhancing how clinical trials are designed, conducted, analysed, and reported—ultimately aiming to improve patient care

Who is eligible to apply?
Applicants need a relevant bachelor’s degree (typically UK 2:1 equivalent); strong master’s or professional experience may also qualify. UK & international students may apply, with up to 30% of awards for international candidates. Non-native English speakers must provide IELTS ≥6.5 overall (with ≥6.0 in writing) or TOEFL iBT ≥90.
When and how do I apply?
Project adverts go live around October/November; application deadlines typically fall in early January. You can apply for multiple projects using the same application form, but if you are shortlisted, you will be interviewed for only one, chosen during shortlisting. This will usually be your first-choice project.
What funding and support are offered?
The TMRP DTP studentships are fully funded PhD studentships. This covers fees, stipend, a Research Training and Support Grant (RTSG) for all students whether Home or International. These will be at the minimum rates offered by the UKRI.
What is the DTP structure and training like?
We offer a mixture of online and in-person sessions across the period of the studentship. Our core training matrix is below:

How is supervision and support arranged?
Students have a lead supervisor based at the research organisation they have been appointed to, with several co-supervisors potentially at other organisations, and access to pastoral and training support through the DTP.
Where will I be based and what about relocation?
Students are based at their host institution. Unfortunately financial relocation support is not available from the DTP.
Does the DTP focus on DE&I?
Yes—the TMRP DTP explicitly encourages applications from diverse backgrounds (age, disability, gender identity, ethnicity, etc.) and includes measures to support inclusivity. Studentships are open to both UK and international candidates.
