Eligibility

We encourage applications from diverse career paths and backgrounds and from all areas of our community regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation, amongst other protected characteristics. Candidates should have a degree in a relevant field to their chosen project. The TMRP DTP Universities generally require the equivalent of a minimum 2:1 in your first degree, but exceptions can be made where applicants can demonstrate excellence in alternative ways. At TMRP we recognise that there are many ways to show excellence (including, but not restricted to, performance in masters courses, internships or employment). We are happy to consider applications from candidates with lower than a 2:1 award where excellence can be demonstrated in other ways – this would be considered on a case by case basis, and dependent upon approval from the relevant host institution.

TMRP DTP studentships are available to UK and international students. Due to UKRI funding regulations we are only able to offer up to 30% of our studentships to international applicants.

English language

For applicants whose first language is not English, or if you have not studied recently in the UK, you must provide evidence of how you meet the English Language requirement.

We mainly accept IELTS or TOEFL tests. Please note IELTS and TOEFL are only valid for two years.

We require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall or TOEFL (iBT) 90. Each component of the English test should meet the minimum requirement of IELTS 5.5 in all components, TOEFL (iBT 22). For the  writing component , we expect you to have achieved a minimum of 6.0 (IELTS).

If your IELTS or TOEFL expires before the start of your programme, you will need to take another official English test before we can issue you with a CAS for your visa application. This is a requirement of UKVI.

Further information regarding eligibility can be found in the MRC terms and conditions.

Applicants who have successfully completed an undergraduate degree (of at least three years duration), a postgraduate taught degree (of at least one year), or a PhD in one of the UKVI-defined majority English speaking countries are not usually required to complete an additional English language test.
